Elixir House: Quilting a Legacy: Nicodemus, KS with Kyle Odom at The Clover Room
Kyle Odom, a textile artist, energy healer, and psychic medium/reader will share a unique and personal artistic project that ties into a significant piece of history. Kyle is a descendant of settlers from Nicodemus, Kansas, one of the last homesteads established by freed slaves west of the Mississippi. Last summer marked their 145th homecoming reunion, and Kyle created an art quilt in tribute to their courageous ancestors who journeyed from Lexington, Kentucky.
Kyle Odom's quilt tells a story. It features a replica of the original recruitment poster, promising land in Kansas for $5 – a fortune back then. It also depicts the first church and school, where their grandfather studied. The Kansas state flower, the sunflower, blooms throughout, and a striking image of the Buffalo Soldiers who honor Nicodemus each year during the homecoming parade. This quilt is a tribute to their courage, resilience, and the legacy they built.
Please join us to hear Kyle's family story and view the historic quilt work of art. We hope it inspires you to learn more about your family history, and the stories that bind us across generations.
A wildcrafted tea blend featured in Lucretia VanDyke's book, "African American Herbalism" will be served. Bring your favorite mug and let's share stories and space at The Clover Room.
